Our History
Southside Montessori School is a boutique, independent and co-educational school located in the South-West of Sydney. Our campus borders the Georges River and surrounding wetlands, with beautiful native bushland and wildlife that hold a special connection for our children and their families. Our community school offers authentic Montessori education for children from 3-12 years of age.
Established 43 years ago, Southside Montessori School has a long and distinguished history, proudly paving the way for other Montessori schools and pre-schools who strive to emulate our beautiful educational environment.
In 1977, 70 motivated parents joined forces to establish the first Montessori school in the Southern suburbs of Sydney. In 1979, this vision came to fruition and the first seven preschool students aged 3-6 years, joined the foundation Cycle 1 class. In 1980, the need for a primary class evolved and the first Cycle 2, (6-9 years) class was held on the property of Saint Paul's Church in Oatley. As this class grew into a need for a 9-12 (Cycle 3) class, the search for a larger premises was forged. In 1985, Southside Montessori School was opened as a preschool and primary school in Riverwood, serving families of the Inner West, South West and beyond. In 2012, a multi-purpose hall and three new classrooms were built through generous funding from the Australian Government, enhancing the functionality of the school's infrastructure.
Southside is the only Montessori school in NSW to host a Premier Teacher Training Centre onsite, where aspiring Montessori educators complete their AMI Montessori Diploma with internationally acclaimed teacher trainers from Sydney Montessori Training Centre.
Over the years, members of the Southside community have made significant contributions to Montessori education at both state and federal levels. Southside is fortunate to share a wealth of knowledge provided by founding members, staff, consultants and educationalists who continue to contribute to our educational community as it continues to flourish into the future.
Today, our programs have expanded to provide extra - curricular activities including coding and robotics, taekwondo, aerobics and our intensive swimming program. Regular incursions, excursions and camps complement the rich Curriculum provided by Southside.
